This Monday Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), presented the final document of the Forest Day 3 at a press conference at the COP 15 thus conveying the key messages from Forest Day 3 to the negotiators at the COP 15.
Among the keytopics were: Efforts to reduce CO2 emissions from the world's forests by deforestation (REDD +), the fight against the trading of illegal timber and efforts to secure the indigenous peoples rights. The fight against the trading of illegal timber is a Danish key priority and at the Forest Day 3 the Environmental Ministers from Denmark and the United Kingdom signed a joint declaration aiming to adopt new EU legislation prohibiting this trade. In order to solve the problem of deforestation, which is a significant contributor to the global emissions of CO2, it is crucial to focus on the financing and compensation of countries in the 3rd world where the problems of deforestation are predominant.
The issue of funding was also addressed in relation to the livelihoods of indigenous peoples, where the struggle for survival overrules the wider objective of protecting forests.
In that light UN climate chief Yvo de Boer also concluded that efforts mitigating climate change must be linked closely to the conservation of biodiversity, protection of indigenous people’s rights and sustainable development. More information:
