Welcome to Forest Day 3 – Field Trips

The Danish Ministry of the Environment, Forest and Nature Agency is pleased to invite Forest Day 3 participants as well as other stakeholders to take part in organised field trips to Danish state forest areas north of Copenhagen, Monday 14 December 2009.

Field trips will go to different locations highlighting different challenges and opportunities for sustainable forest management in the context of climate change mitigation and adaptation.

All field trips will end with a joint visit and a reception at the historical castle of Kronborg in Elsinore.

Route A: ONLINEREGISTRATION IS CLOSEDWill take you to one of the largest afforestation areas in Denmark, where special emphasis is made on creating recreational opportunities for the population of the western suburbs of Copenhagen. It demonstrates the strong involvement of local stakeholders and the engagement in social activities and nature education. The tour will also address energy production from forests and protection of groundwater, as well as introduce you to one of the areas where “modern forestry practises” was started in Denmark 250 years ago.

The excursion pamphlet for Route A is available in PDF format here.

Route B: ONLINEREGISTRATION IS CLOSED. Will introduce you to the Danish national park concept, which has recently been established by law in the Danish parliament. The objective of the proposed national park in Northseeland is protection and extension of nature, cultural and historical values as well as recreational values and opportunities. Re-establishment of natural hydrology is one of the features of this park-concept. The tour will also introduce you to a newly established cooperation between forest and water supply authorities, which has led to significant payment for environmental services provided by forests. Finally the tour will demonstrate forest certification as a tool to promote sustainable forest management and the supply of sustainably produced timber.

The excursion pamphlet for Route B is available in PDF format here.

Route C: ONLINEREGISTRATION IS CLOSED. Takes you to the oldest deer park in Denmark, at the same time the oldest plantation, now a mixed stand dominated by 250 years old beech trees. This area has been of enormous recreational significance for the population of Copenhagen and is still the most visited forest in Denmark. The tour takes you further to another forest with a high standing volume. The role and importance of forests as carbon sinks and storage will be discussed together with production of renewable energy and the possibilities of including CO2-management as a part of overall forest planning. Long term adaptation of tree-species to climate change will be the last focus area, including reference to an example of Ash die-back.

The excursion pamphlet for Route C is available in PDF format here.
